Dynamite airs tonight (Sept. 25) with a live show from Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York City. This is the third episode of Dynamite during the five week build towards WrestleDream, which takes place on October 12.

Tonight is AEW’s Grand Slam event in New York City, and it’s always one of the company’s most heavily promoted Dynamite shows of the year. It often features an AEW world championship match, but there isn’t one scheduled for this year. Bryan Danielson was originally supposed to defend the AEW world title against Darby Allin tonight, but that was before Jon Moxley suffocated the champ with a plastic bag on September 7. Bryan hasn’t been seen in AEW since then, and we don’t know when he will be medically cleared to return. Moxley ended up taking the match with Darby, so that weasel Nigel McGuinness decided to challenge Bryan to a non-title match at Grand Slam. Nigel knows that Bryan is not medically cleared to compete, so he’s spent the last couple of weeks doubling down on calling Bryan a fragile coward who is afraid to fight him in New York City.

That’s the angle AEW is going with, which means every advertisement for tonight’s Danielson vs. McGuinness match has come with the caveat of “If Bryan is cleared to wrestle.” It’s an open question in kayfabe, and AEW is totally fine with taking the unconventional approach of letting the audience think there’s a good chance the match may not happen at all. Perhaps that approach is perfectly fine in 2024, as most wrestling fans reading these words understand that Bryan will indeed be in the building and medically cleared in time to beat the shit out of Nigel. One other thing to keep in mind is that just because there isn’t an AEW world championship match scheduled for tonight doesn’t guarantee there won’t be one. Christian Cage has a contract for a world title match any time he wants one, so when Danielson does show up to kick Nigel’s ass, Christian may decide to cash in on him afterwards.

Jon Moxley vs. Darby Allin is advertised for tonight, with Darby’s guaranteed world title shot on the line. Mox recently used a hammer to smash up Private Party, weeks after using a plastic bag to suffocate Bryan Danielson, so there’s no telling what lengths he’ll go to in order to win. This is Jon’s first match in AEW since the end of June, and it seems like he plans to take over the company. The Young Bucks are scheduled to defend the AEW world tag team championship against Will Ospreay and Kyle Fletcher. Will someone else from the Don Callis family (such as Konosuke Takeshita) ruin this one for Will and Kyle? Regardless, this match could be incredible if it gets enough time. AEW Women’s World Champion Mariah May puts her title on the line tonight against Yuka Sakazaki. I don’t think Yuka has any chance in hell of winning this match, but I’m also a dummy who gets these things wrong half the time. FTW Champion HOOK defends the unrecognized gold tonight against Roderick Strong. HOOK is the hometown hero and has yet to lose a match at these New York City Grand Slam events. Finally, Prince Nana will provide an update on Swerve Strickland, who hasn’t been around since Hangman Page jammed a needle through his face and broke a chair over his head at All Out.
