SmackDown airs tonight (Apr. 18) with a live show emanating from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. This is the final episode of SmackDown during the seven week build towards WrestleMania 41, which takes place on Saturday (Apr. 19) and Sunday (Apr. 20) night.
It was a surreal and unforgettable moment when John Cena sold his soul to The Rock and finally turned heel at Elimination Chamber on March 1. However, Cena’s heel turn has cooled off fast over the last six weeks. Cena is a part-timer who wasn’t around on WWE programming for the first two weeks after his turn because he had more important Hollywood obligations to deal with. That wasn’t a great start to his heel turn, of course. His first promo as a heel was fascinating to watch on the March 17 episode of Raw in Brussels, as he officially broke up with WWE fans after being sick of their abusive relationship. However, his follow-up promo one week later rehashed similar talking points instead of focusing on more interesting things like his personal beef with WWE Champion Cody Rhodes and why he sold out to The Rock. Business picked up the week after that on March 31 when Cody and Cena finally fired away with some deeply personal shots on the mic, and Cody laid out John with his finisher.
Unfortunately, John once again disappeared from WWE programming after that angle; he’s been nowhere to be seen on Raw or SmackDown in April. It only makes things worse that The Rock never returned to WWE after Elimination Chamber to keep people interested in his role in Cena’s heel turn, which should have been a critical part of the story. WWE hasn’t even confirmed if the Final Boss will be at WrestleMania this weekend. That all leads to tonight’s go home episode of SmackDown, where Cena returns on the eve of WrestleMania. Rhodes is also in the house, so the stage is set for one final explosive confrontation before they main event night two of WrestleMania on Sunday and fight over the WWE championship.
WWE Women’s Champion Tiffany Stratton was ambushed multiple times by an unhinged Charlotte Flair last week. GM Nick Aldis needs to quickly find a WrestleMania opponent for Randy Orton if he doesn’t want to eat another RKO. Jacob Fatu looks unstoppable, especially after laying out United States Champion LA Knight at the end of last week’s show. Jade Cargill and Naomi really want to beat the shit out of each other on the big stage, but Naomi has advised Jade to proceed with caution. Santos Escobar was trying to butter up Rey Fenix after his win over Berto last week, probably because he hopes to recruit Rey into Legado del Fantasma.
