Dynamite airs tonight (Oct. 23) with a live show from Maverik Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. This is the second episode of Dynamite during the six week build towards Full Gear, which takes place on November 23.
Chris Jericho lost clean against ROH World Champion Mark Briscoe at WrestleDream, but that didn’t stop him one bit in his quest to become The Nueve. Jericho once again brought up the late Jay Briscoe in a promo last week, and that was enough to earn him a championship rematch tonight on Dynamite. It’s Mark Briscoe vs. Chris Jericho in a Ladder War for the gold. It’s essentially a Fight Without Honor but with a shitload of ladders. It’s worth wondering how well Jericho’s almost 54-year-old body can withstand the bumps and brutality that comes with a Ladder War. Thankfully for Chris, he has his henchmen Big Bill and “Bad Apple” Bryan Keith on hand who can take some of the punishment. Briscoe’s allies in The Conglomeration should also be around to help fight off Jericho’s goons, if necessary.
Kamille faces Queen Aminata, which could allow for further build with Kris Statlander in the battle to prove who is AEW’s strongest woman. With four more Wednesdays until Full Gear, there is still an unevenness in the creative of AEW. Perhaps best exemplified by the potential main event. The violence inflicted last week by Blackpool Combat Club was a strong display. A slow controlled burn rather than a chaotic wildfire. The possible connection/collision course with The Elite adds intrigue. As the weeks go by, the BCC needs to not just retread the same creative issues that made the last battle for AEW’s heart and soul artificial. The line between a wrestling angle and feeling like a “real” takeover attempt is thin. We’ve seen already this year the early promise of The New Elite squandered. That last shot of WrestleDream, which framed Darby Allin, Orange Cassidy, and HOOK was foreshadowing. Allin appears to be the long-term prospect for dethroning Moxley. Returning to Dynamite, The House of Black could in the short-term step up to challenge for the AEW trios championship. Further clarity and direction are needed.
If there’s one thing that can bring about Mark’s downfall here, it might just be fellow Conglomeration member Rocky Romero. Jericho tried to plant the seeds of dissent in Rocky’s mind before WrestleDream. It didn’t prove fruitful for The Learning Tree on that night, but maybe enough time has now passed for Rocky to realize that Chris was right and he deserves to be more than just a lackey in The Conglomeration. AEW World Champion Jon Moxley is scheduled to appear on Dynamite. Orange Cassidy has already said that he is not the right guy to lead AEW in this ongoing war against Moxley’s Combat Club. Darby Allin is probably the leader AEW needs, but he was nowhere to be seen last week.
