Dynamite airs tonight (Nov. 20) with a live show from Santander Arena in Reading, Pennsylvania. This is the final episode of Dynamite during the six week build towards Full Gear, which takes place on Saturday night (Nov. 23).
AEW is advertising an “All Star 8-Man Tag” match on tonight’s episode of Dynamite. The babyface all-stars include Mark Davis, Ricochet, Powerhouse Hobbs, and Will Ospreay. The heel all-stars consist of the Don Callis Family (Brian Cage, Kyle Fletcher, Lance Archer, and AEW International Champion Konosuke Takeshita). An all-star is typically defined as an athlete who performs at an outstanding level or ranks among the very best at their position. With that concept in mind, it’s apparent to me right away that this All Star 8-man tag team match could use a few more actual all-stars to live up to the billing.
Archer and Cage have been in AEW for a long time and are not booked like all-stars. Mark Davis just returned from injury and is not an all-star. There’s potential for Powerhouse Hobbs and Kyle Fletcher to become all-stars, but they still need some important wins to get there. That’s especially true for Fletcher, who has not beaten any upper card stars in a singles match in AEW. that leaves at most three all-stars in this All Star 8-man tag match: Ospreay, Ricochet, and Takeshita. Sure, the “All Star” misnomer for this bout is a minor detail in the bigger picture, but it’s the sort of intentionally inaccurate detail that pro wrestling promoters often run with that will always get an eye roll out of me. At any rate, this match is here because Ospreay is set to clash with his former friend Fletcher at Full Gear, while Ricochet has never been pinned in AEW and is pursuing Takeshita’s gold. Ricochet’s streak isn’t in jeopardy tonight because there are plenty of non all-stars in the bout who can take the fall. Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see just how far Ospreay and Fletcher are willing to take things if they get their hands on each other in this match.
