Dynamite airs tonight (Mar. 19) with a live show from Liberty First Credit Union Arena in Omaha, Nebraska. This is the second episode of Dynamite during the four week build towards AEW Dynasty, which takes place on April 6.
Tonight’s episode of Dynamite features a Street Fight between AEW World Champion Jon Moxley and Adam “Cope” Copeland with the gold on the line. The AEW world title isn’t often defended on Dynamite, so this match is kind of a big deal. Moxley retained the belt against Cope earlier this month at Revolution in a match where Christian Cage turned it into a 3-way and took the fall. Cope is getting one more crack at the belt here because Mox wasn’t able to directly beat him at Revolution. The Death Riders story has been a drag on AEW programming more often than not, so one could easily argue that now is the right time to pivot away from Mox as world champion. Tony Khan did recently put the kibosh on Jeff Jarrett’s world title chase when the writing was on the wall, so there’s at least a small chance that Moxley is dropping the gold here.
However, the most likely case is that this match is designed to tie up some loose ends before Swerve Strickland is the next top babyface to challenge Moxley for the gold at Dynasty. The fact that this is a street fight means anyone can legally interfere. That opens the door for the injured Death Riders like Claudio Castagnoli and PAC to return and screw over Cope, if Jay White doesn’t stab him in the back first. Will Mox and Cope bring the violence and put on a better show than they did in the main event of Revolution?
