Preview:

Dynamite airs tonight (Aug. 14) with a live show from Chartway Arena in Norfolk, Virginia. This is the seventh episode of Dynamite during the eight week build towards All In, which takes place on August 25 at London’s Wembley Stadium. Matthew and Nicholas Jackson won the AEW world tag team titles almost four months ago at the Dynasty pay-per-view, but they have not defended the belts. Their sporadic appearances in AEW this summer have come under scrutiny; for example, the only time they wrestled in July was when they surrendered at the Blood & Guts cage match.

The rumor mill has indicated the Young Bucks are on a limited dates contract and have been waiting for Tony Khan to give them the call to show up on TV. That phone call appears to have been made, because Matthew and Nicholas are back on Dynamite tonight to finally defend the belts against The Acclaimed, who beat the champs in a non-title match back in June. The Bucks are douchebag heels who might try to abuse their power as AEW EVPs to give themselves an edge in tonight’s title match. However, it’s not clear what they are allowed to get away with in that regard since Tony Khan is the babyface owner of AEW who can overrule them whenever he chooses. Christopher Daniels is also a babyface authority figure, but it’s not clear why he still exists in that role since Khan often makes decisions without Daniels’ involvement.

Tonight’s tag team championship match is another chance to add some spark to that story, so we’ll see if AEW can get it back on track. Then again, maybe AEW has already decided to abandon the idea of going any deeper with the power struggle story. For what it’s worth, FTR happens to be lurking in the periphery of this match tonight, as they want a tag team title match at All In. That’s the underwhelming state of things in what started as a very interesting power struggle storyline in April when Jack Perry and the Bucks took out Khan with a Meltzer Tony Khan Driver. The EVPs ran amok with power for a few weeks while Khan was unable to travel, but once he returned to AEW, things basically went back to normal. Sometimes the Bucks abuse their power. Sometimes Khan let’s them get away with it, sometimes he doesn’t. Sometimes the Bucks compete in what’s supposed to be an important group match like Anarchy in the Arena or Blood & Guts, but the outcomes of these matches have no bearing on the power dynamic between Khan and the EVPs. The whole thing should have culminated in a compelling high stakes match at AEW’s biggest show of the year at Wembley Stadium, but it instead has just fallen flat and has been a major disappointment.
