Dynamite airs tonight (Dec. 25) with a taped show (spoilers are here) from Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. This is the final episode of Dynamite during the five week build towards Worlds End, which takes place on Saturday (Dec. 28).
When the 2024 Continental Classic tournament began, I figured there’s a very good chance that Will Ospreay ranks first or second in the Gold league, because there’s no way Tony Khan is leaving the world’s best wrestler off the Worlds End pay-per-view that’s taking place this weekend. Well here we are on the final day of the round robin portion of the tournament, and Ospreay needs a Christmas miracle in order to make that happen.
Claudio Castagnoli and Ricochet each currently sit atop the Gold League standings with 9 points. They control their own destinies tonight on Dynamite on 34th Street; each wrestler can advance to Worlds End with either a win or a draw. Ospreay, Darby Allin, and Brody King are next in the Gold League standings with 6 points each. They will all need some help to have a chance to advance to the semifinal round of the C2 at Worlds End. You can read a more thorough breakdown of the scenarios for both leagues here. In the case of Ospreay, he first has to beat Brody King tonight. It’s a must-win match for both wrestlers, as a win is the only way to raise their score up to 9 total points.
After that, Ospreay needs to avoid finishing in a tie at 9 points with Darby Allin and Ricochet, because they’ve already beaten him in the C2. Darby vs. Ricochet happens to be booked on tonight’s show, and Ospreay needs Ricochet to walk away from that match with a win or a draw. This serves two purposes for Will; it keeps Darby below 9 points, and it moves Ricochet above 9 points, ensuring that Ospreay doesn’t finish tied with either man. The final piece of the puzzle is the unlikely Christmas miracle that is completely out of Will’s control; he needs Komander to pull off the biggest upset of the tournament and knock off Claudio Castagnoli tonight. A loss for Claudio keeps him at 9 points, giving Ospreay the tiebreaker over him due to Will’s head-to-head victory earlier in the tournament. The round robin portion of the C2 also wraps up for the Blue League tonight with Kazuchika Okada (7 points) vs. Shelton Benjamin (6) and Daniel Garcia (7) vs. Kyle Fletcher (9). Mark Briscoe is idle and currently tied atop the standings at 9 points, but he can’t score any more points and will be mathematically eliminated if Okada wins.
Garcia, Fletcher, and Okada each control their own destinies and advance to Worlds End with a win. Fletcher can also advance if he draws with Garcia. The most straightforward way for Shelton to advance is if he beats Okada while Fletcher beats Garcia. Meanwhile, the best outcome for Briscoe is a tie between Okada and Benjamin. Given that tonight’s show features five total matches in the Continental Classic, there isn’t a lot of room for other bouts on the card. But there is a women’s match advertised between Toni Storm and Taya Valkyrie. Storm seems to have amnesia and is appreciative of this opportunity to show what she can do in AEW. Valkyrie and Deonna Purrazzo aren’t buying Toni’s act at all and are ready to dish out some pain.
