TONIGHT (Sat., Sep. 14, 2024) live from inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, we’ve got Saul “Canelo” Alvarez going up against Edgar Berlanga, in the latest installment of one of boxing’s longest rivalries — Mexico vs. Puerto Rico.

While Berlanga is not what most fight fans wanted (we were all pining for David Benavidez, sigh), this is still a great matchup featuring a Top 10-ranked fighter taking on the pound-for-pound great on one of the premier nights of boxing, Mexico’s Independence Day. Canelo needs no introduction — he’s boxing’s biggest star right now and has been for a few years. Pretty much everyone knows who he is. However, he’s indulging in a bit of cherry picking right now, fighting what many perceive to be an easier fighter compared to other potential challenges out there. But, in the end, we’re still getting a great bout, so there’s no point in crying over the what if’s, but instead we’re here to enjoy what we get.

Berlanga is a Nuyorican icon. The 27-year old undefeated boxer’s record includes 17 knockouts in 22 contests and he’s one of the brighter lights in the current crop of Puerto Rican boxing’s heritage. In one of the most obvious statements you’ll read all year, this is easily his toughest test, and we’re going to either have a massive upset — the likes of which would rival Mike Tyson vs. Buster Douglas — or yet another jewel in the crown of boxing’s royalty (Canelo). We’re also treated to two more championship bouts on this night, starting with Caleb Plant taking on Trevor McCumby for the interim WBA Super Middleweight strap. While Plant is the known entity, having been in the spotlight against the likes of Anthony Dirrell, Benavidez, and, of course, Canelo himself), McCumby is the younger, undefeated boxer with 21 knockouts in 28 wins. Plant is a huge favorite, but I wouldn’t be shocked if McCumby has some moments.

This will be a very fun Main Event and the spectacle around Canelo Alvarez fighting on Mexican Independence Day is always one to witness. He'll have the stern skill advantage over his opponent here in Edgar Berlanga and while the challenger is certainly a dangerous prospect, the betting lines indicate that this fight should be all Canelo all the way. Still, don't be surprised if we see flashes from Edgar Berlanga and even a chance of seriously stunning the champion. His power is no joke and if he's able to land cleanly while Alvarez's backs up, he could have a chance to shock the world with a KO-win. Still, we have to side with Canelo Alvarez to win this fight and it wouldn't be wise to bet against him on this occasion. Still, there's not much value to be had in his betting line, so let's side with him to take this fight into the later rounds and eventually take the decision on the judges' scorecards.
