The battle for cruiserweight supremacy on Saturday, November 16th, 2024, at The Venue Riyadh Season, Riyadh, as Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez meets Chris Billam-Smith in a unification bout. With both boxers currently reigning as world champions, the match should be nothing short of explosive on such a huge platform.
Gilberto Ramirez, meanwhile, comes into the fight as the current WBA cruiserweight champion with much experience from being a super middleweight titleholder. He has shared a ring with some of the best this sport has to offer while going the distance with Dmitry Bivol in what was ultimately a unanimous decision loss but showed that he can be durable and technically skilled. This unification bout is going to be something special, and Chris Billam-Smith has taken a path where the amount of development and grit is, in fact, outstanding. He won the WBO title with a thrilling points victory over Lawrence Okolie back in 2023, then went on to defend his belt in impressive style over Mateusz Masternak and Richard Riakporhe. The win over Riakporhe avenged his solitary defeat to date, which really nailed home his position as a leading light in the division.
The Briton has been competing professionally for a shorter time (since 2017), but also has one loss – to Richard Riakporhe. The difference is that, unlike Ramirez, Chris avenged his defeat. Five years later, he defeated his only conqueror, taking away his undefeated status and defending his WBO title for the second time. This fight is currently the latest for the Englishman. Previously, Billam-Smith defeated Lawrence Okolie and Mateusz Masternak. We are inclined to believe that the Mexican will win the upcoming fight, as his southpaw stance could be very inconvenient for Billam-Smith. The Englishman will try to close the distance with Gilberto to work at a comfortable range for himself, but it's unlikely that Ramirez will allow him such an opportunity. Therefore, the likely outcome of the bout will be a victory for Ramirez by judges' decision. He won't be able to knock out Chris, who has a granite chin, but outscoring him on points is quite possible.
