Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will return to Ball Arena in Denver, Colo., on Sat., July 13, 2024, for the first time since the historic 25th anniversary event in 2018 with a meaningful showdown between top-ranked women’s Flyweight contenders Rose Namajunas (No. 6) vs. Tracy Cortez (No. 11). In UFC Denver’s co-main event, a thrilling Lightweight bout sees Denver’s own, Drew Dober, lock horns with Jean Silva, who is coming off a blistering knockout over Charles Jourdain just a few weeks ago. Rose Namajunas will fight Tracy Cortez in a flyweight headliner at UFC Fight Night in Denver on July 13 2024.The flyweight’s take the spotlight as Rose Namajunas and Tracy Cortez will headline a stacked UFC Fight Night in Denver today at Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado. UFC Fight Night in Denver was supposed to feature the most highly anticipated bout in the women's flyweight division since Alexa Grasso vs. Valentina Shevchenko 2 back in 2023. Namajunas, a former title holder and No. 6 contender, was slated to fight Barber, the division's fourth-ranked contender. However, the latter pulled out for reasons still unknown to fans.Namajunas (12-6) is coming off a unanimous victory over Amanda Ribas in March. She is currently ranked No. 6 in the division. This is her third fight at the flyweight level. “Thug Rose” was a former two-time strawweight champion before making the jump. She holds seven wins by submission. Cortez (11-1) has not lost since her MMA debut in 2017. Currently ranked No. 10 in the division, her most recent victory was via unanimous decision over Jasmine Jasudavicius back in September 2023. In a concerning trend, all but two of her victories have come via decision. This is easily the biggest fight of her career, and it comes unexpectedly.
Cortez was originally scheduled to fight next week against Miranda Maverick but was switched after Namajunas’ opponent Maycee Barber had to withdraw due to injury. That sets up this intriguing encounter. Cortez will have strong advantages in power striking categories and wrestling while Namajunas’ rigorous training regimen will prepare her for the elevation and what could be a long, dragged-out fight. Namajunas’ well documented experience against high quality fighters is also likely to play a role, as is her submission expertise. Keep an eye on the punches. Namajunas’ jabs can take a toll on any given night, but especially in this environment.
