Raw airs tonight (Oct. 7) with a live show from Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri. This is the first episode of Raw during the four week build towards Crown Jewel, which takes place next month in Saudi Arabia.
This week, three matches have been officially scheduled: Gunther (c) vs. Sami Zayn for the World Title, Sheamus vs. Peter Dunne in a Donnybrook Match, and Jey Uso (c) vs. Xavier Woods for the IC Title. In other news regarding WWE Raw, Seth Rollins returned last week to screw Bronson Reed in his Last Monster Standing Match against Braun Strowman in the main event as payback for the plethora of Tsunamis he sustained weeks ago. Pure Fusion Collective are still feuding with Zelina Vega and company. Also, Killer Kross not only elicited dissension in The New Day but also Awesome Truth. GUNTHER vs. Sami Zayn for the World heavyweight championship is the main attraction on tonight’s two hour episode of Raw. Zayn repeatedly asked GUNTHER for a title shot over the last month, only to be declined over and over again. Every time he turned down Zayn, GUNTHER said it was because Sami isn’t on his level. The idea is that GUNTHER was full of shit and didn’t want to risk losing his championship to the man who ended his historic reign as Intercontinental champion earlier this year at WrestleMania 40.
Sami confronted the champ one more time last week and said GUNTHER is proving to his family that he’s a coward. GUNTHER responded by choking the life out of Sami and obliterating him with a powerbomb. As Sami’s unconscious body lay there on the mat, GUNTHER finally accepted his challenge, and the match was made official for tonight. That Sami earned this title match by getting his ass kicked by the Ring General wasn’t a great look for him, as it actually provided some credence to GUNTHER’s claim that Sami isn’t on his level. Shortly thereafter, WWE teased a title match between GUNTHER and Bron Breakker. Then at Bad Blood, WWE shot an angle between GUNTHER and Goldberg that sure looked like it’s leading to a match when Goldberg mouthed “You’re next!”
With Bron Breakker and Goldberg potentially waiting in the wings, and GUNTHER kicking Sami’s ass last week before accepting his challenge, the message I got is that Sami is indeed not on GUNTHER’s level, and he’s a severe underdog in tonight’s title fight. But sometimes I’m an idiot who gets these things all wrong, so maybe Sami Zayn will fight like it’s WrestleMania all over again and whoop GUNTHER’s ass one more time.
