SmackDown airs tonight (Dec. 13) with a live show emanating from XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut. This is the second episode of SmackDown during the nine week build towards Royal Rumble, which takes place on February 1.

Tonight’s episode of SmackDown will be largely focused on the semifinal round of the Women’s United States Championship tournament. Bayley and Chelsea Green will do battle on one side of the bracket, while Michin vs. Tiffany Stratton is scheduled on the other side of the bracket. The winners of these matches will advance to the final round tomorrow at Saturday Night’s Main Event, where history will be made when the inaugural champion is crowned. Conventional wisdom says the final match of the tournament will probably feature a babyface versus a heel. In this scenario, the two possible combinations are Bayley vs. Stratton or Michin vs. Green (who fought each other in a Dumpster match back in October). Once we know the winner of the first semifinal match, it will give us some insight as to who is winning the other semifinal match. That’s assuming conventional wisdom holds.

Bayley is clearly the biggest star left in the tournament and has the best chance to establish credibility for the new belt, just like Seth Rollins did last year for the World Heavyweight Championship. She looks like the favorite to win. Tiffany Stratton seems unlikely to win the US title, because she is still walking around with the Money in the Bank contract that she needs to figure out when to cash in. Michin may be the biggest underdog of all considering that she has rarely been pushed on the main roster and Bayley stands out as the higher ranking babyface. Chelsea Green is the wild card. She appears to be overmatched against any of these women, but that’s pretty much the trick she always plays before pulling out a win when it is least expected.
