Dynamite airs tonight (Mar. 12) with a live show from Save Mart Center in Fresno, California. This is the first episode of Dynamite during the four week build towards AEW Dynasty, which takes place on April 6.
Kenny Omega just won the AEW International championship from Konosuke Takeshita at Revolution, and Tony Khan has already mapped out a tournament to determine his first challenger for the gold. The tournament begins tonight on Dynamite with Orange Cassidy vs. CMLL’s Hechicero and The Beast Mortos vs. a mystery Wild Card wrestler. The first round wraps up this weekend on Collision with Mark Briscoe vs. Mark Davis and Ricochet vs. Katsuyori Shibata. The winners of these four matches meet next week (Mar. 19) on Dynamite in a 4-way match, and whoever wins that one will challenge Omega for the title at Dynasty on April 6.
Cassidy, Wild Card, Briscoe, and Ricochet stand out as the favorites to win in the first round. That’s because Hechicero, Mortos, Davis, and Shibata mostly lose when they wrestle singles matches on AEW programming; they are unlikely to be pushed to a title match against Omega on PPV. Naturally, the most intriguing aspect of this tournament revolves around the identity of the mystery man. Right away, “Speedball” Mike Bailey and Josh Alexander come to mind as two stars linked to AEW in recent rumors who have yet to debut for the promotion. But if the idea is for the mystery man to be someone who is already on the AEW roster that we haven’t seen for a while, how about former TNT Champion Jack Perry? The Elite have problems with Kenny going back to last year, and Perry was rumored to be earmarked for Omega’s return feud at one point.
