Dynamite airs tonight (Jan. 1) with a live show from Harrah’s Cherokee Center in Asheville, North Carolina. This is the first episode of Dynamite during the seven week build towards Grand Slam: Australia, which takes place on February 15.
Back in November, AEW World Champion Jon Moxley had an interview with the media where he referred to his return in August as Day Zero of a “hard reset and complete restart” for the company. Moxley gave off the impression that he has a lot of creative control and/or influence over his current run on top with the Death Riders, and he has groundbreaking ideas to help AEW move forward in the best way possible. The Death Riders angle did have some intrigue when it began, but unfortunately it has quickly lost momentum. The was quite evident at Worlds End, which was overall a pretty strong showing for AEW with the exception of a couple of low points. One of those lows was the sheer amount of interference that plagued Moxley’s world title main event match. It’s the kind of crap I expect to see on a badly booked Vince McMahon wrestling show. Jay White did indeed prove to be the dumbest ass, as his decision to save Wheeler Yuta from injury a few weeks ago allowed Yuta to constantly interfere at Worlds End and save Mox’s championship reign yet again.
For all of Moxley’s talk over the last few months about changing things in AEW and doing things we’ve never seen before, it turns out he’s just another dime a dozen heel that wins in the weakest ways and needs the numbers game to stay on top. Yawn. There’s nothing new or inspiring about what he’s doing in the main event, so if this is the best he’s got, then maybe it’s time for a change. Copeland returned at Worlds End to stop Moxley from seriously injuring dumbass Jay White. Now it will be Copeland and FTR in a trios match tonight at Fight for the Fallen against Moxley, Yuta, and Claudio Castagnoli.
Tune into the “mother of all simulcasts” tonight on either TBS or MAX to find out. Hangman Page vs. Orange Cassidy is scheduled to take place tonight at Fight for the Fallen. Cassidy has now failed twice to win the AEW world championship from Moxley, so it might be time for the Hangman to beat OC and out of the main event picture for now. The Hurt Syndicate’s Bobby Lashley & Shelton Benjamin are teaming up to take on The Acclaimed. The fact that AEW never booked a rematch between Bob and Swerve Strickland tells me that Tony Khan doesn’t want either guy to lose right now. So this match isn’t really a question of which team will win, and is more about whether The Acclaimed will finally implode with one member turning on the other. Max Caster and Anthony Bowens haven’t been on the same page in a while, so it might be time for one of them to accept MVP’s business offer and finally put an end to all this scissoring nonsense.
