SmackDown airs tonight (Jan. 3) with a live show emanating from Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona. This is the fifth episode of SmackDown during the nine week build towards Royal Rumble, which takes place on February 1.

SmackDown officially expands to three hours starting with tonight’s episode, and Naomi is challenging Nia Jax for the WWE Women’s Championship. This match was booked following Naomi’s pin fall victory in a six-woman tag team match last week. Naomi is not only looking to win championship gold, but to also hurt Jax for pushing a conspiracy theory about Bianca Belair being the mystery attacker who took out Jade Cargill. Some folks believe that Naomi might actually be the culprit, which would mean she’s definitely dangerous enough to beat Jax for the belt.

On this week’s WWE Friday Night SmackDown, Andrade looks for revenge against Shinsuke Nakamura. It’s no surprise that Andrade has not forgotten what Nakamura did to him in the latter’s comeback match in late November 2024. To pick up the victory, the “Wayward Samurai” would utilize the exposed turnbuckle to pick up the win over the former NXT Champion. Surely enough, Andrade has not forgotten about that nefarious encounter. On top of that, Andrade has been on the hunt for the U.S. Title over the last couple of months, and this match will be killing two birds with one stone and may lead him one step closer to a shot at the belt. It’s not going to be easy for Andrade, though, considering how more lethal Shinsuke Nakamura is now more than ever. Regardless, Andrade will show up for a fight and try to get retribution.

There’s one obvious wild card in play that can affect the outcome of this match, and that’s Tiffany Stratton’s Money in the Bank contract. Stratton’s incompetence at cashing in the contract has been established to the point where Jax mocks her for it now on a weekly basis. It would be a hell of a way to kick off 2025 and SmackDown’s three hour era with an unforgettable cash-in where Tiffany finally screws over Jax and takes her belt. This title change has been brewing for months, and it’s a great time to pull the trigger. The only other match advertised for tonight is a non-title bout between Andrade and United States Champion Shinsuke Nakamura. Andrade will probably earn a future title match if he can pull off the win. It won’t be easy though, as nobody has been able to get the better of Nakamura since he returned to WWE in November.
