SmackDown airs tonight (Jan. 31) with a live show emanating from Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. This is the final episode of SmackDown during the nine week build towards Royal Rumble, which takes place tomorrow night (Feb. 1).

Michael Cole announced that WWE’s transfer window is closing for good this weekend, and that means WWE is running out of time to shake up the rosters for Raw and SmackDown. Last week’s episode of SmackDown saw GM Nick Aldis announce several changes, such as Damian Priest and The Miz coming over to the blue brand while Austin Theory and Grayson Waller were shipped off to Raw. The transfer window moves might be even more frantic tonight, because Indianapolis is the site of Royal Rumble; all the stars from Raw could potentially be in the house for SmackDown on the eve of the Rumble. Overall, I’d say the transfer window concept works a lot better for the flow of WWE programming than the annual WWE Draft. The draft will likely be back this year since it’s usually good for ratings, but it’s kind of pointless to redraft the entire roster all over again each year when WWE does such a poor job of adhering to the post-draft rosters. Last year’s draft happened at the end of April, which is three months away, so the closing transfer window isn’t really that big of a deal.

The one cross-brand match on the card tonight is Liv Morgan vs. WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion Naomi. Both women declared for the women’s Royal Rumble match last week, and Liv has followed that up with multiple team wins over Naomi and Bianca Belair. There’s a chance this match might exist so that a bunch of other women from Raw and SmackDown can run in from the back and incite a large brawl, trying to throw each other over the top rope to tease what might happen at the Royal Rumble. In that case, don’t be surprised if Nia Jax is the last woman standing when all is said and done.

Women’s United States Champion Chelsea Green defends the gold tonight against Michin. This is Michin’s final shot at the title, because Green already retained the belt against her earlier this month. The babyface is hopeful things will work out differently this time if B-Fab can neutralize Piper Niven at ringside. Motor City Machine Guns join forces with Los Garza for an 8-man tag team match against Pretty Deadly and WWE Tag Team Champions DIY. Chris Sabin and Alex Shelley will try to keep up their momentum as the hottest team in WWE heading into their 2-out-of-3 falls tag team title match at Royal Rumble. I’m sure that Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa won’t hesitate to abandon the match and feed Pretty Deadly to the wolves, so to speak, if the going gets tough. Jimmy Uso vs. Carmelo Hayes is also advertised for tonight. These guys had a pretty darn good match a couple weeks ago that didn’t have a conclusive finish due to outside interference from Jacob Fatu and Tama Tonga. Hayes is coming off a loss last week against Damian Priest, while Big Jim was pinned by Kevin Owens, so both stars are desperate to get back in the winners’ column ahead of the Royal Rumble.
